Using only frozen water from the Torne River, artists from all over the world gather in this small Swedish village, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, to create an exclusive art exhibition: ICEHOTEL. The building process starts in mid-November when the snow guns start humming and large clouds of snow start to drift along the Torne River.

The hotel is located in a restored thousand-year-old Byzantine monastic retreat which offers modern conveniences without distracting from the spiritual feeling of the area which has been known to be inhabited for more than five thousand years.

Gamirasu hotel is a combination of seven old houses with 30 rooms, exquisitely restored and combined. Part of the hotel was used by Christian monks until recently. Some of the rooms were actually monk cells. The quality of the cave rooms makes you feel cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Volcanic rock called "tufa" is perfect insulation material which keeps the temperature between 17 - 20 degrees Celsius throughout the year. All rooms are different from each other in their size, shape and qualities. More info

The rooms are in renovated sewage pipes. The beauty of these pipes is that their concrete utilitarian look needs little alteration to make them habitable - a coat of varnish is all that is necessary. The tubes have also have received wall paintings by the Austrian artist Thomas Latzel Ochoa to make them seem a little more user friendly.
The hotel “rooms” are supposedly full of home comforts including double bed, light, hut sleeping bags, and the hotel complex features toilets, showers, mini bar, cafeteria etc. Your hotel “room” is secured by a security key code, to ensure that all of your luggage is safe whilst you visit the local attractions.
